John had been a long term campaigner against nuclear weapons and has spoken frequently of the huge danger of keeping a nuclear armed fleet of submarines at Faslane.
"Nuclear weapons are an abomination, a horrendous waste of money and an accident waiting to happen. The fact that they are located in the central belt, Scotland’s most populated area, is another example of the contempt in which successive Westminster governments have held Scotland. It is time to put an end to nuclear weapons once and for all”

Trident debate - chance to say No to NATO and Yes to peace
Replacing Trident is a commitment to nuclear re-arming for another 40 years, Britain promised to begin negotiations to disarm in 1968, since then the world has changed beyond recognition, even a former defence minister describes as ‘complete insanity’ the concept that the UK defence strategy should be based on a Cold War premise of the ability to ‘flatten Moscow’.
The financial burden of Trident to a country struggling to maintain any semblance of a nurturing public sector is beyond reason, the cost of replacement could be used to wipe out almost the entire budget deficit for a year, allowing public services to recover from years of imposed austerity.
